Linux Kernel 2.6.8.1.5 shmem.c shmem_nopage address denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.8.1.5 (Operating System). This issue affects the function shmem_nopage of the file shmem.c. The manipulation of the argument address with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The shmem_nopage function in shmem.c for the tmpfs driver in Linux kernel 2.6 does not properly verify the address argument, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel crash) via an invalid address.

The bug was discovered 04/01/2005. The weakness was released 05/02/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared at ubuntulinux.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-0977 since 04/05/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 248 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21928 (CentOS 3 / 4 : kernel (CESA-2005:366)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117964 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2005:366)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (20852) and Tenable (21928). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 1226, 1227, 1228 and 1224.
