A vulnerability was found in Zend Engine up to 2.2.1a. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component ZendSession Manager Daemon. Multiple buffer overflows in the (a) Session Clustering Daemon and the (b) mod_cluster module in the Zend Platform 2.2.1 and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code via a (1) empty or (2) crafted PHP session identifier (PHPSESSID).
The bug was discovered 08/21/2006. The weakness was disclosed 08/25/2006 by Stefan Esser with Hardened PHP Project (Website). The advisory is shared for download at hardened-php.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-4431 since 08/28/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22273 (Zend Session Clustering Daemon PHP Session Identifier Remote Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at zend.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
