A vulnerability has been found in Sendmail (Mail Server Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Mail Header Handler. The manipulation as part of a Long Header leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
Use-after-free vulnerability in Sendmail before 8.13.8 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a long "header line", which causes a previously freed variable to be referenced. NOTE: the original developer has disputed the severity of this issue, saying "The only denial of service that is possible here is to fill up the disk with core dumps if the OS actually generates different core dumps (which is unlikely)... the bug is in the shutdown code (finis()) which leads directly to exit(3), i.e., the process would terminate anyway, no mail delivery or receiption is affected."
The bug was discovered 08/09/2006. The weakness was disclosed 08/28/2006 by Moritz Jodeit with OpenBSD (Website). The advisory is shared at openbsd.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-4434 since 08/28/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 19 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22706 (Debian DSA-1164-1 : sendmail - programming error), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sendmail.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28662) and Tenable (22706). The entries 2495 and 2496 are pretty similar.
