A vulnerability was found in IBM Lotus Notes up to 6.4 (Groupware Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is some unknown functionality of the file notes.ini. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the Lotus Notes client for Domino 6.5 before 6.5.4 and 6.0 before 6.0.5 allows local users to cause a denial of service (client crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via the NOTES.INI file.

The weakness was disclosed 04/06/2005 by Ollie Whitehouse with Symantec (Website). The advisory is available at www-1.ibm.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-1442 since 05/03/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

By approaching the search of inurl:notes.ini it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.

Upgrading to version 6.5 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (20044). The entries 1340, 1342, 1343 and 1341 are pretty similar.
