A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in phpBB (Forum Software). This issue affects the function make_clickable of the file bbcode.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. The bbencode_second_pass and make_clickable functions in bbcode.php for phpBB before 2.0.15, as used in viewtopic.php, privmsg.php, and other scripts, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary script via a BBcode tag with a (1) javascript:, (2) applet:, (3) about:, (4) activex:, (5) chrome:, or (6) script: URI scheme, as demonstrated using the URL tag.

The bug was discovered 05/13/2005. The weakness was presented 05/09/2005 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-1193 since 04/21/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18124 (phpBB <= 2.0.14 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 2.0.15 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4407.
