A vulnerability has been found in Invision Power Services IP.Board up to 2.0.3 (Forum Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file search.php. The manipulation of the argument highlite with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in (1) search.php and (2) topics.php for Invision Power Board (IPB) 2.0.3 and earlier allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the highlite parameter.

The bug was discovered 05/05/2005. The weakness was shared 05/05/2005 by James Bercegay with Gulftech (Website). The advisory is shared for download at gulftech.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-1597 since 05/16/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
