ImageMagick up to 6.2.2 infinite loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick (Image Processing Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The XWD Decoder in ImageMagick before 6.2.2.3, and GraphicsMagick before 1.1.6-r1, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via an image with a zero color mask.

The weakness was released 05/21/2005 by Tavis Ormandy with Gentoo Linux Security Audit Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ubuntulinux.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-1739. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18380 (GLSA-200505-16 : ImageMagick, GraphicsMagick: Denial of Service vulnerability), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120302 (Solaris Multiple vulnerabilities in ImageMagick).

Upgrading to version 6.2.2.3 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (20744), Tenable (18380), SecurityFocus (BID 13705†), OSVDB (16774†) and Secunia (SA15429†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-3330, VDB-3329, VDB-3331 and VDB-3332. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
