A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox 1.0.3/1.0.4 (Web Browser). This issue affects some unknown processing. Firefox 1.0.3 and 1.0.4, and Netscape 8.0.2, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by tricking the user into using the "Set As Wallpaper" (in Firefox) or "Set as Background" (in Netscape) context menu on an image URL that is really a javascript: URL with an eval statement, aka "Firewalling."
The bug was discovered 07/12/2005. The weakness was disclosed 05/03/2005 by Matthew Mastracci (moz_bug_r_a4) (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-2262 since 07/13/2005. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21949 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2005:586)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117887 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2005:586)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3377.
