A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.4.1 (Network Authentication Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Key Distribution Center. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the Key Distribution Center (KDC) in MIT Kerberos 5 (krb5) 1.4.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (apllication crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a certain valid TCP or UDP request.
The bug was discovered 07/12/2005. The weakness was released 07/18/2005 by Daniel Wachdorf as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-1175 since 04/19/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21840 (CentOS 3 : krb5 (CESA-2005:562)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117882 (CentOS Security Update for krb5 (CESA-2005:567)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11520.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21328) and Tenable (21840). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 1599, 1598, 1600 and 25512.
