Unknown vulnerability in the LDAP dissector in Ethereal 0.8.5 through 0.10.11 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (free static memory and application crash) via unknown attack vectors.
The bug was discovered 07/26/2005. The weakness was disclosed 08/10/2005 by Steve Grubb (iDefense) with iDEFENSE (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at gentoo.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-2360 since 07/26/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19329 (GLSA-200507-27 : Ethereal: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117869 (CentOS Security Update for ethereal (CESA-2005:687)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
