A vulnerability was found in Ethereal (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component SMB Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Unknown vulnerability in the SMB dissector in Ethereal 0.9.0 through 0.10.11 allows remote attackers to cause a buffer overflow or a denial of service (memory consumption) via unknown attack vectors.
The bug was discovered 07/26/2005. The weakness was disclosed 08/10/2005 by Steve Grubb (iDefense) with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared for download at gentoo.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-2365 since 07/26/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21850 (CentOS 3 / 4 : ethereal (CESA-2005:687)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117869 (CentOS Security Update for ethereal (CESA-2005:687)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21585) and Tenable (21850). The entries 25974, 25973, 25971 and 25970 are pretty similar.
