The weakness was presented 08/10/2005 by Steve Grubb (iDefense) with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared at gentoo.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-2366. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21850 (CentOS 3 / 4 : ethereal (CESA-2005:687)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117869 (CentOS Security Update for ethereal (CESA-2005:687)).
