A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows Server 2003/XP (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component IPv6 Stack ICMP Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a entropy vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-331. The product uses an algorithm or scheme that produces insufficient entropy, leaving patterns or clusters of values that are more likely to occur than others. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
TCP, when using a large Window Size, makes it easier for remote attackers to guess sequence numbers and cause a denial of service (connection loss) to persistent TCP connections by repeatedly injecting a TCP RST packet, especially in protocols that use long-lived connections, such as BGP.
The bug was discovered 07/30/2003. The weakness was shared 10/10/2006 by Paul with Microsoft as MS06-064 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0230 since 03/17/2004. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600.001 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by Aphex and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at packetstormsecurity.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 209 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18023 (MS05-019: Vulnerabilities in TCP/IP Could Allow Remote Code Execution (893066)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 82054 (TCP Sequence Number Approximation Based Denial of Service).
Applying the patch MS06-064 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2523.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15886), Tenable (18023) and Exploit-DB (276). The entries 1361, 2600, 2601 and 9965 are related to this item.
