Firefox before 1.0.7 and Mozilla Suite before 1.7.12 allows remote attackers to modify HTTP headers of XML HTTP requests via XMLHttpRequest, and possibly use the client to exploit vulnerabilities in servers or proxies, including HTTP request smuggling and HTTP request splitting.
The bug was discovered 09/21/2005. The weakness was disclosed 09/23/2005 (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-2703 since 08/26/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21963 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2005:785)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115281 (Multiple Vulnerabilities in Firefox and Mozilla Suite (Mozilla Foundation MFSA 2005-58)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 31016.
