The weakness was presented 11/02/2006 by Stefan Esser with hardened-php.net (Website). The advisory is shared at ubuntu.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-5465 since 10/23/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27148 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : apache2-mod_php5 (apache2-mod_php5-2238)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12233 (PHP Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at php.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
