Ethereal 0.10.12 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via unknown vectors in (1) the IrDA dissector and (2) the SMB dissector when SMB transaction payload reassembly is enabled.
The weakness was released 10/19/2005 by iDefense with iDEFENSE (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ethereal.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-3242 since 10/17/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21865 (CentOS 3 / 4 : ethereal (CESA-2005:809)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117829 (CentOS Security Update for Ethereal (CESA-2005:809)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
