Ethereal up to 0.10.12 denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Ethereal 0.10.12 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (null dereference) via unknown vectors in the (1) SCSI, (2) sFlow, or (3) RTnet dissectors.

The weakness was published 10/19/2005 by iDefense with iDEFENSE (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ethereal.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-3246 since 10/17/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21865 (CentOS 3 / 4 : ethereal (CESA-2005:809)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117829 (CentOS Security Update for Ethereal (CESA-2005:809)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (22803) and Tenable (21865). Similar entries are available at 26678, 26677, 26676 and 26674.
