A vulnerability was found in phpBB (Forum Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function array_merge
of the component Security Check. The manipulation of the argument _session
with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
phpBB 2.0.17 and earlier, when register_globals is enabled and the session_start function has not been called to handle a session, allows remote attackers to bypass security checks by setting the $_SESSION and $HTTP_SESSION_VARS variables to strings instead of arrays, which causes an array_merge function call to fail.
The bug was discovered 08/14/2005. The weakness was disclosed 10/31/2005 by Stefan Esser with Hardened-PHP Project (Website). The advisory is available at hardened-php.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-3416 since 11/01/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 78 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22791 (Debian DSA-925-1 : phpbb2 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23967) and Tenable (22791). The entries 27254, 26821, 26766 and 26765 are pretty similar.
