A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP (Operating System) and classified as critical. The bug was discovered 11/14/2006. The weakness was released 11/14/2006 by Peter Winter-Smith and Sam Arun Raj (McAfee) with NGS Software as MS06-066 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-4688 since 09/11/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2462 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23643 (MS06-066: Vulnerability in the Client Service for NetWare Could Allow Remote Code Execution (923980)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90363 (Client Service for NetWare Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS06-066)).
Applying the patch MS06-066 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 9132. In this case the pattern |05 00 00|
is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4843.
