A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Agent ActiveX. Integer overflow in the ReadWideString function in agentdpv.dll in Microsoft Agent on Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2, and Server 2003 up to SP1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a large length value in an .ACF file, which results in a heap-based buffer overflow.

The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was disclosed 11/14/2006 by Agent with Microsoft as MS06-068 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-3445 since 07/07/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2462 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23645 (MS06-068: Vulnerability in Microsoft Agent Could Remote Code Execution (920213)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l.

Applying the patch MS06-068 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 9433. In this case the pattern |C2 AB CD AB| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4836.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29945) and Tenable (23645). The entries 2689, 2686, 2688 and 2684 are pretty similar.
