The exif_read_data function in the Exif module in PHP before 4.4.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a malformed JPEG image.
The weakness was disclosed 11/18/2005 with Redhat (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-3353. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20206 (RHEL 3 / 4 : php (RHSA-2005:831)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117800 (CentOS Security Update for PHP (CESA-2005:1110)).
Upgrading to version 4.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
