IBM WebSphere Application Server up to 6.1.0.3 numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Off-by-one error in the ldap scheme handling in the Rewrite module (mod_rewrite) in Apache 1.3 from 1.3.28, 2.0.46 and other versions before 2.0.59, and 2.2, when RewriteEngine is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted URLs that are not properly handled using certain rewrite rules.

The weakness was shared 11/20/2006 by Mark Dowd (McAfee) with IBM (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at www-1.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-3747 since 07/20/2006. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22152 (Slackware 10.0 / 10.1 / 10.2 / 8.1 / 9.0 / 9.1 / current : Apache httpd (SSA:2006-209-01)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Slackware Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86846 (HP System Management Homepage Code Execution and Denial of Service).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ibm.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 11679. In this case the pattern GET is used for detection.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28063), Tenable (22152) and Exploit-DB (2237). The entries 2414, 2701, 2700 and 3136 are related to this item.
