Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in act_newsletter.php in phpwcms 1.2.5 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the (1) i and (2) text parameters.
The bug was discovered 11/14/2005. The weakness was shared 11/24/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-3790 since 11/24/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 10 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:act_newsletter.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12227 (PHPWCMS Multiple Cross-Site Scripting and Directory Traversal Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
