Affected is an unknown functionality of the file admin/main.php. The manipulation of the argument sid with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Directory traversal vulnerability in admin/main.php in AMAX Magic Winmail Server 4.2 (build 0824) and earlier allows remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary files with session information via the sid parameter.

The bug was discovered 10/28/2005. The weakness was shared 11/18/2005 by Secunia Security Advisories (Website). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-3811 since 11/25/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 21 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:admin/main.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20227 (Winmail Server <= 4.2 Build 0824 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
