A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function ip6_input_finish
of the file ip6_input.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Memory leak in the ip6_input_finish function in ip6_input.c in Linux kernel 2.6.12 and earlier might allow attackers to cause a denial of service via malformed IPv6 packets with unspecified parameter problems, which prevents the SKB from being freed.
The bug was discovered 08/29/2005. The weakness was released 11/27/2005 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-3858 since 11/27/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 710 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21977 (CentOS 4 : kernel (CESA-2006:0101)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117771 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2006:0140)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (24505) and Tenable (21977). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 1712, 1817, 1833 and 1879.
