Sun JRE 1.3.0/1.3.1/1.4.1/1.4.2/1.5.0 Java Sandbox Remote Code Execution

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Sun JRE 1.3.0/1.3.1/1.4.1/1.4.2/1.5.0 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Java Sandbox. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Unspecified vulnerability in Java Management Extensions (JMX) in Java JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 3, 1.4.2 and later, 1.3.1 and later allows remote attackers to escape the Java sandbox and access arbitrary files or execute arbitrary application via unknown attack vectors.

The bug was discovered 11/28/2005. The weakness was presented 11/30/2005 by Adam Gowdiak as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-3904 since 11/30/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/10/2019). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115306 (Sun Java JRE and SDK Multiple Sandbox Security Bypass Issues).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (23252). See 27181, 27180, 27179 and 28638 for similar entries.
