A vulnerability was found in SUN JDK up to 1.3.1_15 (Programming Tool Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Java Sandbox. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Unspecified vulnerability in reflection APIs in Java SDK and JRE 1.3.1_15 and earlier, 1.4.2_08 and earlier, and JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 3 and earlier allows remote attackers to escape the Java sandbox and access arbitrary files or execute arbitrary application via unknown attack vectors, a different vulnerability than CVE-2005-3906. NOTE: this is associated with the "first issue" identified in SUNALERT:102003.
The bug was discovered 11/28/2005. The weakness was shared 11/30/2005 by Adam Gowdiak as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-3905 since 11/30/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20731 (GLSA-200601-10 : Sun and Blackdown Java: Applet privilege escalation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115306 (Sun Java JRE and SDK Multiple Sandbox Security Bypass Issues).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23250) and Tenable (20731). The entries 27181, 27180, 27178 and 28638 are related to this item.
