A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Microsoft Word 2000/2002/2003 (Word Processing Software). Affected is some unknown functionality of the component DOC Document Handler. Unspecified vulnerability in Microsoft Word 2000 and 2002, Office Word and Word Viewer 2003, Word 2004 and 2004 v. X for Mac, and Works 2004, 2005, and 2006 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a Word document with a malformed string that triggers memory corruption, a different vulnerability than CVE-2006-6456.
The bug was discovered 12/05/2006. The weakness was presented 12/05/2006 by Juha-Matti Laurio with Microsoft as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-5994 since 11/21/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/21/2024).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4905.
