Citrix Presentation Server up to 9.200 WFICA.OCX SendChannelData heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Citrix Presentation Server up to 9.200 (Connectivity Software). Affected by this issue is the function SendChannelData of the file WFICA.OCX. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the SendChannelData function in wfica.ocx in Citrix Presentation Server Client before 9.230 for Windows allows remote malicious web sites to execute arbitrary code via a DataSize parameter that is less than the length of the Data buffer.

The bug was discovered 12/04/2006. The weakness was published 12/06/2006 by Andrew Christensen (TippingPoint) with FortConsult (Website). The advisory is shared for download at fortconsult.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-6334 since 12/06/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Elazar and been published 2 years after the advisory. The exploit is available at fortconsult.net. It is declared as functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.citrix.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
