Foo Labs Xpdf up to 3.0.1 jpxstream.c readcodestream memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Foo Labs Xpdf up to 3.0.1 (Document Reader Software). Affected is the function jpxstream::readcodestream of the file jpxstream.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the JPXStream::readCodestream function in the JPX stream parsing code (JPXStream.c) for xpdf 3.01 and earlier, as used in products such as (1) Poppler, (2) teTeX, (3) KDE kpdf, (4) CUPS, and (5) libextractor allows user-assisted attackers to cause a denial of service (heap corruption) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted PDF file with large size values that cause insufficient memory to be allocated.

The weakness was shared 12/06/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at idefense.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-3193 since 10/14/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20277 (Fedora Core 3 : gpdf-2.8.2-5.2 (2005-1125)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117788 (CentOS Security Update for kdegraphics (CESA-2005:868)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23441), Tenable (20277), SecurityFocus (BID 15721†), Secunia (SA17912†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1015309†). The entries VDB-27351, VDB-27327, VDB-27885 and VDB-27884 are related to this item. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
