Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP SNMP memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component SNMP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the SNMP Service in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2, Server 2003, Server 2003 SP1, and possibly other versions allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted SNMP packet, aka "SNMP Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 12/12/2006. The weakness was presented 12/12/2006 by Kostya Kortchinsky and Clement Seguy with Google as MS06-074 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-5583 since 10/27/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

The exploit is available at immunitysec.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2490 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23837 (MS06-074: Vulnerability in SNMP Could Allow Remote Code Execution (926247)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l.

Applying the patch MS06-074 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 13619. In this case the pattern 0 is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8610.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30606), Tenable (23837), SecurityFocus (BID 21537†), OSVDB (30811†) and Secunia (SA23307†). See VDB-82, VDB-332, VDB-333 and VDB-427 for similar entries.
