The weakness was presented 12/19/2006 by Vladimir Vukicevic (shutdown) as MFSA2006-70 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-6497 since 12/13/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67432 (Oracle Linux 4 : thunderbird (ELSA-2006-0760)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156235 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Firefox (ELSA-2006:0758)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
