The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the Network Block Device (nbd) server 2.7.5 and earlier, and 2.8.0 through 2.8.2, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a large request, which is written past the end of the buffer because nbd does not account for memory taken by the reply header.
The bug was discovered 01/28/2011. The weakness was published 12/21/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ubuntulinux.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-3534 since 11/16/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22790 (Debian DSA-924-1 : nbd - buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
