Merak Mail Server 5.5.1 dir/include.html lang path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Merak Mail Server 5.5.1 (Mail Server Software). Affected is some unknown functionality of the file dir/include.html. The manipulation of the argument lang with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

dir/include.html in IceWarp Web Mail 5.5.1, as used by Merak Mail Server 8.3.0r and VisNetic Mail Server version 8.3.0 build 1, allows remote attackers to include arbitrary local files via a null byte (%00) in the lang parameter, possibly due to a directory traversal vulnerability.

The weakness was disclosed 12/27/2005 by Tan Chew Keong (Website). The advisory is shared for download at secunia.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-4557 since 12/28/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:dir/include.html it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20346 (VisNetic / Merak Mail Server Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23897) and Tenable (20346). The entries 26477, 26476, 27794 and 27793 are pretty similar.
