Linux Kernel 2.6.8/2.6.8.1/2.6.8.1.5/2.6.9/2.6.10 mca/init denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.8/2.6.8.1/2.6.8.1.5/2.6.9/2.6.10 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the file mca/init. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The Linux kernel before 2.6.11 on the Itanium IA64 platform has certain "ptrace corner cases" that allow local users to cause a denial of service (crash) via crafted syscalls, possibly related to MCA/INIT, a different vulnerability than CVE-2005-1761.

The issue has been introduced in 12/24/2004. The weakness was released 12/31/2005 as Bug 155283 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-0136 since 01/25/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 168 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18444 (RHEL 4 : kernel (RHSA-2005:420)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115057 (Multiple Linux Kernel IOCTL Handlers Local Memory Corruption Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 2.6.11 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (22625) and Tenable (18444). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 1479, 1478, 21885 and 24081.
