A vulnerability was found in Sun JavaMail 1.1.3/1.2 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. ** DISPUTED ** ReadMessage.jsp in JavaMail API 1.1.3 through 1.3, as used by Apache Tomcat 5.0.16, allows remote attackers to view other users e-mail attachments via a direct request to /mailboxesdir/username@domainname. NOTE: Sun and Apache dispute this issue. Sun states: "The report makes references to source code and files that do not exist in the mentioned products."
The weakness was presented 12/31/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared at tomcat.apache.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-1753 since 05/26/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. By approaching the search of inurl:readmessage.jsp it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11889 (TripWire Enterprise Console Prior to version 8.6.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities.).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
