Directory traversal vulnerability in Ipswitch WhatsUp Small Business 2004 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via ".." (dot dot) sequences in a request to the Report service (TCP 8022).
The bug was discovered 11/02/2005. The weakness was shared 12/31/2005 by Dennis Rand (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-1939 since 06/13/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 59 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38488 (IPSwitch WhatsUp Small Business 2004 Report Service Directory Traversal Vulnerability).
