Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows NT 4.0 SP6a, Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP1, Windows XP SP2, and Windows Server 2003 SP1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (client crash) via a certain combination of a malformed HTML file and a CSS file that triggers a null dereference, probably related to rendering of a DIV element that contains a malformed IMG tag, as demonstrated by IEcrash.htm and IEcrash.rar.

The issue has been introduced in 08/27/2001. The weakness was released 12/31/2005 by Peter Ferrie with GNUCITIZEN (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-4717 since 02/15/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1587 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:iecrash.htm it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
