A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Graphviz. This issue affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
graphviz before 2.2.1 allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on temporary files. NOTE: this issue was originally associated with a different CVE identifier, CVE-2005-2965, which had been used for multiple different issues. This is the correct identifier.
The weakness was shared 12/31/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared at ubuntulinux.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-4803 since 05/17/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19965 (Debian DSA-857-1 : graphviz - insecure temporary file), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 2.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (22556) and Tenable (19965). The entry 28108 is related to this item.
