Linux Kernel up to 2.6.13.4 hugetlb.c unmap_hugepage_area denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The hugepage code (hugetlb.c) in Linux kernel 2.6, possibly 2.6.12 and 2.6.13, in certain configurations, allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) by triggering an mmap error before a prefault, which causes an error in the unmap_hugepage_area function.

The issue has been introduced in 12/18/2003. The weakness was published 12/31/2005 as Bug 165345 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-4811 since 09/22/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 744 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22513 (CentOS 4 : kernel (CESA-2006:0689)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156246 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2006:0617, ELSA-2006:0689)).

Upgrading to version 2.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 10 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (22513). Similar entries are available at 2256, 2254, 2255 and 2257.
