A vulnerability was found in IBM DB2 7.0/7.1/7.2/8.0/8.1 (Database Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in JDBC Applet Server in IBM DB2 8.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary by connecting and sending a long username, then disconnecting gracefully and reconnecting and sending a short username and an unexpected db2java.zip version, which causes a null terminator to be removed and leads to the overflow.
The bug was discovered 10/06/2004. The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2005 by David Litchfield with NGSSoftware (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-4866 since 10/06/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 11 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15486 (IBM DB2 < 8 Fix Pack 7a Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3277.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17613) and Tenable (15486). The entries 822, 873, 867 and 866 are pretty similar.
