IBM DB2 7.1/7.2/8.0/8.1 Shared Memory information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in IBM DB2 7.1/7.2/8.0/8.1 (Database Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Shared Memory. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Shared memory sections and events in IBM DB2 8.1 have default permissions of read and write for the Everyone group, which allows local users to gain unauthorized access, gain senstitive information, such as cleartext passwords, and cause a denial of service.

The bug was discovered 09/01/2004. The weakness was shared 12/31/2005 by Chris Anley with NGSSoftware (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-4868 since 10/06/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 46 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15486 (IBM DB2 < 8 Fix Pack 7a Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17605) and Tenable (15486). The entries 822, 873, 867 and 866 are related to this item.
