Stack-based buffer overflows in the (1) xmlvarcharfromfile, (2) xmlclobfromfile, (3) xmlfilefromvarchar, and (4) xmlfilefromclob function calls in IBM DB2 8.1 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a 94-byte second argument, which causes the return address to be overwritten with a pointer to the argument.
The bug was discovered 10/06/2004. The weakness was released 12/31/2005 by David Litchfield with NGSSoftware (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at nextgenss.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-4870 since 10/06/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
