MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.5.1 xprt->xp_auth memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.5.1 (Network Authentication Software). Affected is the function xprt->xp_auth. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The RPC library in Kerberos 5 1.4 through 1.4.4, and 1.5 through 1.5.1, as used in Kerberos administration daemon (kadmind) and other products that use this library, calls an uninitialized function pointer in freed memory, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors.

The bug was discovered 01/09/2007. The weakness was published 01/10/2007 by Andrew Korty with Indiana University (Website). The advisory is shared for download at web.mit.edu. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-6143 since 11/28/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27996 (Ubuntu 6.06 LTS / 6.10 : krb5 vulnerability (USN-408-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165095 (SUSE Security Update for krb5 (SUSE-SA:2007:004)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at web.mit.edu. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (31422), Tenable (27996), SecurityFocus (BID 21970†), OSVDB (31281†) and Secunia (SA23903†). Similar entry is available at VDB-2822.
