MIT Kerberos 5-1.5/5-1.5.1 kadmin memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos 5-1.5/5-1.5.1 (Network Authentication Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component kadmin. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The "mechglue" abstraction interface of the GSS-API library for Kerberos 5 1.5 through 1.5.1, as used in Kerberos administration daemon (kadmind) and other products that use this library, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via unspecified vectors that cause mechglue to free uninitialized pointers.

The bug was discovered 01/09/2007. The weakness was disclosed 01/10/2007 by Andrew Korty with MIT (Website). The advisory is available at web.mit.edu. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-6144 since 11/28/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39310 (Solaris 10 (x86) : 141720-01), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165095 (SUSE Security Update for krb5 (SUSE-SA:2007:004)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at web.mit.edu. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (31417), Tenable (39310), SecurityFocus (BID 21975†), OSVDB (31280†) and Secunia (SA35151†). The entry VDB-2820 is pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
