A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.5 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function xuldocument.persist
. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is integrity. The XULDocument.persist function in Mozilla, Firefox before 1.5.0.1, and SeaMonkey before 1.0 does not validate the attribute name, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary Javascript by injecting RDF data into the user s localstore.rdf file.
The bug was discovered 02/01/2006. The weakness was published 02/02/2006 by Johnny Stenback (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0296 since 01/18/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21891 (CentOS 3 / 4 : mozilla (CESA-2006:0199)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117751 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2006:0200)).
Upgrading to version 1.5.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9037.
