Apple Mac OS X up to 10.x Helper path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.x (Operating System). Affected is an unknown code block of the component Helper. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the BOM framework in Mac OS X 10.x before 10.3.9 and 10.4 before 10.4.5 allows user-assisted attackers to overwrite or create arbitrary files via an archive that is handled by BOMArchiveHelper.

The bug was discovered 03/01/2006. The weakness was disclosed 02/28/2006 by Ilja van Sprundel (iDefense) with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-0391 since 01/24/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20990 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2006-001)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115334 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2006-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2006-03-01)).

Upgrading to version 10.x eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25023) and Tenable (20990). The entries 1918, 26962, 26742 and 26741 are pretty similar.
