PostgreSQL 7.3 before 7.3.13, 7.4 before 7.4.16, 8.0 before 8.0.11, 8.1 before 8.1.7, and 8.2 before 8.2.2 allows attackers to disable certain checks for the data types of SQL function arguments, which allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (server crash) and possibly access database content.
The bug was discovered 02/05/2007. The weakness was published 02/05/2007 with Postresql Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at postgresql.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-0555 since 01/29/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156184 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for PostgreSQL (ELSA-2007:0064)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at postgresql.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
