Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.3 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function get_status of the component winbond. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mtd: spinand: winbond: Fix 512GW, 01GW, 01JW and 02JW ECC information These four chips: * W25N512GW * W25N01GW * W25N01JW * W25N02JW all require a single bit of ECC strength and thus feature an on-die Hamming-like ECC engine. There is no point in filling a ->get_status() callback for them because the main ECC status bytes are located in standard places, and retrieving the number of bitflips in case of corrected chunk is both useless and unsupported (if there are bitflips, then there is 1 at most, so no need to query the chip for that). Without this change, a kernel warning triggers every time a bit flips.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-56771 since 12/29/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 233479 (Ubuntu 24.10 : Linux kernel (Low Latency) vulnerabilities (USN-7380-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.12.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (233479) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0035). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
