nCipher firmware before V10, as used by (1) nShield, (2) nForce, (3) netHSM, (4) payShield, (5) SecureDB, (6) DSE200 Document Sealing Engine, (7) Time Source Master Clock (TSMC), and possibly other products, contains certain options that were only intended for testing and not production, which might allow remote attackers to obtain information about encryption keys and crack those keys with less effort than brute force.
The weakness was shared 03/09/2006 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-1117 since 03/09/2006. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
It is declared as proof-of-concept.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
